A startup accelerator is a structured programme that helps founders make progress over a defined period. It usually combines a cohort of companies, mentoring, practical sessions and opportunities to meet customers, partners or investors.
The right programme should address a specific constraint in your business: validating demand, improving your product, entering a market or preparing to raise capital.
What does an accelerator offer?
- Mentoring: access to operators and specialists who can challenge assumptions and help with decisions.
- Structured support: workshops, milestones and regular reviews that give the team a clear rhythm.
- Connections: introductions to relevant founders, customers, partners and investors.
- Resources: some programmes provide workspace, software credits or other practical support.
- Funding: some invest directly, while others offer grants or no funding. Check each programme's terms.
Accelerator or incubator?
Accelerators commonly work with a cohort over a defined period. Incubators often provide more flexible support while an idea or business takes shape. The labels vary, so compare the actual offer, eligibility and expected commitment.
How to choose a programme
- Define the outcome. Decide what needs to change by the end of the programme.
- Check relevance. Look for experience in your sector, stage and target market.
- Understand the commitment. Review attendance, location, fees, equity and any exclusivity requirements.
- Speak with alumni. Ask what support they used and what happened after the programme.
- Assess the introductions. A large network helps only when the people are relevant and accessible.
What a programme cannot guarantee
Participation does not guarantee investment, customers or product-market fit. Founders still need to test assumptions, execute and measure results. Treat the programme as support for the business rather than an outcome in itself.
